antique appraiser: put it on ebay can call it anything fancy and see how much you will get out from it. you never know, a couple of millions dollars could be in your hand. na.. just kidding. i would use antique appraiser, they will likely be able to tell you what it is and how much it is.
antique appraiser: have it appraised by a reputable antique appraiser. this will do three things. it will let you know the approximate value so you will not be cheated when selling it, it will allow you to insure it if you want, and it will be a validation of authenicity should you decide to sell later.
antique appraiser: thanks everyone! i guess it never even occurred to me to leave the mark. that is what i've decided to do. as far as not refinishing it...well, it's too late. ;-) maybe some people say not to refinish antiques because it decreases the value, but this table was in need of some work. fwiw, my great grandfather wasn't a well known furniture maker, he was a carpenter by trade though. i don't think this would have any value to anyone but me and my family. since i'm the one that will be using it for hopefully the next 50 or more years i decided i wanted it to be refinished in a way that i like, not what some antique appraiser likes. it's now almost all finished and, imo, looks gorgeous...much better than before.
