antique door hardware: hey bev, a few years ago when i was visiting st. louis, my husband and i went to the coolest "hardware" store on cherokee, in the antique/junk store district. they sold nothing but antique fixtures -- door knobs, hinges, light fixtures, sinks, tubs, etc. -- that had been salvaged from old houses. everything was organized impeccably. we were drooling over the stuff and wished that there was a store like that here in the boston area. our house is 75 years old, and a store like this would come in very handy for us. i don't remember the name, but it seemed to be the only one of its kind on cherokee. i seem to recall that it was on a corner, but i could be wrong. antique door hardware: i am replacing the hardware (knobs, hinges, etc.) on all doors in my home. there are schlage high-security deadlocks on my two entrance door that are very expensive ($175 each). the deadlocks have an antique dark bronze finish (the base metal is bronze). my new hardware has a bright brass finish. i can't justify spending a small fortune to buy new deadbolts just to match the other hardware. parts for the deadbolts are not readily available and the parts i would need cost almost as much as new deadbolts. antique door hardware: i am replacing the hardware (knobs, hinges, etc.) on all doors in my home. there are schlage high-security deadlocks on two entrance doors that are very expensive ($175 each). the deadlocks have an antique dark bronze finish; the base metal is bronze. the new hardware has a bright brass finish. i can't justify spending a small fortune to buy new deadbolts just to match the other hardware. parts for the deadbolts are not readily available and the parts i would need cost almost as much as new deadbolts. antique door hardware: i'm going to get one for my front door which has a less secure antique lock on it. i'm sure i can find a nice, decorative brass lock - either a throw bolt or one of those lever-type locks some hotels have - at the local hardware store. | |
