antique gun: i have an antique percussion cap rifle that needs identifying. is there a definitive source for information on antique guns? it's marked "f. r. schwarz st. louis", it's got a hexagonal barrel, and two triggers (one of which makes the trigger "hair-trigger" light).
antique gun: i have aquired an antique cold revolver made in 1871 and patented in 1872. the gun is in excellent shape, it is a single shot with a wood grip and a 7 inch barrell. it was made in manchester, pa (i believe). apprently this was a gun that was carried by the texas rangers.
antique gun: i feed my family through my business of buying & selling collectible & antique guns. i use the better price guides every day, both as a guide to buying and in pricing my inventory to sell. obviously, when buying, i offer a percentage of what i think/hope i can resell the gun for. i also write for several price guides. here's what i use & my comments:
antique gun: flaydermans guide to antique american firearms & their values -- pluses - absolutely the best for it's the limited field it covers, and my nomination for the best gun book ever written. illustrated, excellent descriptions, uses the commonly understood nra antique condition standard definitions. minuses - only lists two condition grades for each model. only updated every 3 to 5 years.
antique gun: blue book of gun values -- pluses - excellent for modern firearms, only major guide to use "percent of original finish" grading method. minuses - not illustrated (pix can be helpful in identifying models). percent of finsih method does not really apply to refinished modern guns or no-finish or patina antique guns. comments - there are a couple spinoffs that are helpful -- blue book for modern black powder and blue book for airguns.
