antique lighting: stopped by an antique market today. bought two old lighters ($3 each). one is an early-generation butane, which i knew was unfixable when i bought it. the second is more standard. square but very flat (not like a zippo) with the "elegant" sort of lighting mechenism- the striking wheel powered by the button that uncaps the wick. after a few hours of tinkering, i am waiting for lighter fluid to seep up into the wick. i've got it striking after an unknown duration of disuse, but it looks to be at least 30 years old, at the very least. it's a black-laquer finish with silver plating on parts... i like it a lot. not much good for lighting a pipe, but i really enjoy fixing old mechanical things.

antique lighting: if you have a great indoors in your area, they have the *best* selection of drapes and window treatments i've found, especially for extra-long windows. and i agree with erica: target has some great buys in lighting, bedding, etc. do check out salvage and antique stores for vintage lighting. my best advice: have patience and hold out for things that you truly *love*. (fi, it took me over a year to find just the right sconces for over my fireplace. they were worth the wait.)
