antique toy: or at 37βΆ each in the paper edition, and very likely to go up: a magnificent green, black, and gold cast-iron and tin american mechanical locomotive marked "jupiter," circa 1880; a red cast-iron steam pumper with firemen, circa 1925, made by the hubley mfg. co., lancaster, pennsylvania; a cast-iron american yellow taxi, circa 1925, by the arcade mfg. co., freeport, illinois; and to complete the set of four, a red cast-iron spring-wound u.s. mail panel truck, circa 1912, by the wilkins toy co., keene, new hampshire. separately, a block of four 37βΆ antique teddy bear stamps is also somewhere on the agenda.
antique toy: the metal toys are from the famed american antique toy collection at the strong museum, rochester, new york. the stamps will be introduced and dedicated at the museum on july 26, and the ceremony is open to the public. antique toy: item 1 - appears to be mohair cat, standing w/ wire rimmed glasses in one hand and a fan in the other. cat is 12" tall, and is a windup musical and or animated toy. the windup mechanism appears to have the letters 'bd' worked into the design. the windup function is not working and i don't want to force it. the condition is very good, i'm just having one heck of a time finding information. i've emailed pics to various online antique toy dealers and none have returned my emails. i've checked ebay many times, as well as kovells with no luck. if anyone can be of assistance in identifying this piece, i would be very appreciative. antique toy: the original question was what is the correct placement of the red and green lights in the 153 signal. i acknowledged that "the prototype was usually green on top". but the original poster did not specifically ask what prototype practice was. i was trying to address the other possible sense of the question of "what lionel intended for their #153" as the original poster may have been trying to achieve an accurate restoration of his antique toy train accessory. for this sense of the question, the results were mixed, leading to my "flip a coin" comment. one must remember that the lionel #153 stands about three times taller than a typical o-27 locomotive, making any attempt at 'lionel prototype accuracy' something of an oxymoron. gary q antique toy: have you guys ever heard of an organization called the international toy collectors association (itca)? they put on something called the antique toy road show. basically they come into an area with a wad of cash, get the news media to give them free coverage (partially due to the name which they have been in litigation with the real antiques road show over) and proceed to buy up as many of the pre 1970's toys as they can for a database of collectors who buy direct from these guys. i have to admit it has me a bit steamed. i live in boise, id not exactly the easiest place to find vintage stuff (i've been beating the bushed for about 5 years here) but then these guys swoop in and deplete what small amount is still around. of course they have every right to do it but it's frustrating and i had to vent. | |
