antique violin: i've only known one "serious" violin player. he was head of the classical violin dept. at university of miami, and first chair violinist of the naples symphony. he lived in my old neighborhood, and he liked to sit in with my former blues band with his black electric zeta violin. we were just a hack white amateur blues band, but he liked the freedom... breaking away from reading notes off the page. he was terrific. it was like having jean luc ponty sit in with your garage band. his "real" antique violin was worth more than his house. it wasn't a strad, but it was still worth more than his house.
antique violin: i was lucky on ebay - found myself a nice old-ish full-size violin in good playing but poor cosmetic condition for â£40 sterling ($60?). as i have some experience with guitar and mandolin repair and maintenance i've been able to sort out the cosmetic problems myself, and with a new bridge and set of strings i have a good student instrument. of course you do have to take pot luck and be able to judge from photos what you're getting - there's a lot of real garbage on there sold as "antique violin of unknown origin", and it seems to be common practise to remove the fine-tuners and half the strings to give the impression that you're bidding on something from the 18th century that someone "found in grandma's attic"...
antique violin: what ive noticed with my jazzica (i have an antique violin finish model) is that i've not needed to use the plugs much through my super reverb at moderate high volume. i've only had it for a month so i've only used it live once. i heard from someone at hofner that a byproduct of the jazzica's body tapering is a slight reduction in feedback issues. i guess you'd have to a/b a new president and jazzica to see if its true. the only archtop i have to compare it to is an ancient es 125 with a p90 that is a feedback machine. really not much of a comparison. personally i have no problem with the way the hofner plugs effect the electric sound of the jazzica. there is a small audible difference, but the guitars tone keeps its character and depth - it still sounds great to me. i have a gig tomorrow that may need the plugs so i'll let ya know how it handles.
