civil war relic: if you are interested in artifacts of the war then you want to look at "north south trader's civil war". its not just relic hunters showing off what they find. there are some great articles on weapons, uniforms, equipment not to mention an excellent series on civil war uniform buttons by dan binder. the editor does a great job chasing down e-bay fakes every once in a while and there are some great pictures from relic hunters showing off what they find as well. its amazing what still comes up out of the ground.
civil war relic: the southern cross farm of riley w. gunter was seeded with relics of days and decades gone by. on the field, 220 metal detector-yielding men, women and children, tense and wired like a sprinter, awaited the starting gun. this group waited for the freeman's battery forrest's artillery camp #1939 (scv) to fire their original civil war cannon.
civil war relic: michael, in virginia we have several civil war relic shows a year. at each one there is always one setup that has an entire library on the "lost cause", black confederates, tariffs and taxes, wirz was innocent, secession was legal, etc., etc....

civil war relic: i just looked through the 2000 edition of the civil war collector's price guide which is put out by north south trader's civil war and there is no mention of discharge papers in it. that is kind of unusual because you do come across them a lot. there is a list serve that you can get to via north south trader's civil war web site or the northern virginia relic hunter's association's (nvrha) as well. just go to google and do a search. they have the address on their links pages. subscribe and ask... you'll get help. be careful of retail sites and stay the heck away from e-bay.
